Planning a holiday when a family member has complex medical needs or mobility requirements can feel overwhelming. Questions about wheelchair access, hoists, wet rooms, and medical equipment can quickly turn excitement into stress.
The good news? Ireland is home to a growing number of accessible destinations that make family holidays feel more possible.
Whether you are a family planning your next break or a healthcare professional supporting clients, there are new accessible destinations around Ireland worth exploring.
Inclusive Adventures for the Whole Family
Center Parcs Longford Forest is a popular option for families seeking a mix of accessibility and activities. Adapted lodges include step-free access and accessible bathroom features, some of the Exclusive lodges have hoists to assist with Hot Tub use! Having everything nearby can make travelling feel less stressful for families managing additional care needs, and Centre Parcs caters for a diverse range of needs.
For those looking for a little wild adventure, Share Discovery Village in County Fermanagh offers accessible self-catering accommodation with wet rooms and layouts suited to mobility equipment. Additional features such as profiling beds and mobile hoists are available on request, and the centre’s pool has a hoist available too!
Lough Ree Access for All has a wheelchair accessible boat, available for cruising the Shannon. With a Sensory Shed nearby this could be an excellent long weekend for an adventurous group!
Ireland hosts a growing number of wheelchair accessible beaches, with Donegal hosting 13 itself! We recommend you check county websites for accessibility for the most up to date information.
We were very excited to see Active Connections CLG expand their offering with a Wheelchair accessible pontoon added this week! Active Connections offer an alternative to HSE respite with their Ember’s Programme focussed on additional support needs. While not publicly available for holidays, their work highlights an important message: accessibility is not only about how you move through a space, but also about meaningful participation. We’re eagerly watching the development of their site and what new skills and experiences they will soon be able to offer.
Nature and Gentle Exploration
Lough Key Forest and Activity Park offers accessible trails and open outdoor spaces for families who enjoy quieter adventures.
There are a growing number of hotels with Sensory Rooms, complimentary ear defenders and neuro-divergent friendly play packs. Sometimes the best holidays are simply about exploring a new setting and some downtime. Quiet Hours are on offer at the National Museum of Ireland sites for those that would benefit from a softer sensory experience.
We also recommend taking a look at some of the new Autism Friendly Towns across Ireland. This initiative with AsIAm has created some brilliant destinations where local businesses are really clued in to additional sensory needs, offering quiet shopping hours amongst a range of activities.
If you just need an afternoon break, have a think about booking a Sensory Room near you. MCS hosts Inspire Together an inclusive space with a sensory playroom and a movement space, a real respite for families looking to play in an environment that works for them.
Accessible holidays are not about perfection. They are about creating opportunities for inclusion, independence, and family connection.
